For Industry

What is A GIFT SEED?

An international collaboration of researchers and partners working to develop genomic tools and resources that will accelerate genetic improvement efforts to benefit the U.S. Christmas tree industry.

5-Part Goal

  1. Accelerate genetic and production improvement of fir Christmas trees by developing genetic and genomic tools.
  2. Using commercially important fir species, identify and study tree drought tolerance in a variety of environments and genetic/mechanical resistance to disease and pests.
  3. Focusing on post-harvest, evaluate consumer preference for fir aroma, as well as study the aroma-producing defensive chemicals in firs and their ecological implications.
  4. Evaluate the potential economic impact of genetic improvement on the US Christmas tree industry and evaluate overall sustainability and benefit for pest and disease management practices.
  5. Develop region-specific Extension and outreach materials including grower surveys and industry needs assessments, and communicate consumer feedback for motivations to purchase real Christmas trees through citizen science to growers and industry stakeholders.
