Chip Dillon      

Shifting Market Place in the Tissue Industry

C.A. (Chip) Dillon will discuss how a shifting marketplace (branded to private labels) will shape the way we do business in the tissue industry. Consolidation? Amazon effect?        

Chip is a Partner at Vertical Research Partners covering the Global Paper and Packaging Industry. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and consistently ranks highly in the major polls/surveys of U.S. Paper and Packaging Analysts, including a #1 ranking on eight occasions in the Institutional Investor (II) poll. David has held various roles in Essity within manufacturing and sourcing, and he currently manages operations, tactics and strategy for the company’s sourcing in US and Canada.

He is a trusted consultant to organizations in the Pulp and Paper Industry for consumer products and papermaking cost savings as well as expertise in tissue papermaking and fiber physics and functionality.

Dr. Richard Phillips     

Global Dynamics in Tissue (Trends, Threats & Opportunities)

Dr. Richard Phillips will provide an overview of the global dynamics affecting the hygiene tissue and personal care industry (fiber source, competition, benchmarking and manufacturing cost). Dr. Phillips is Adjunct Professor and Executive in Residence in the Department of Forest Biomaterials at North Carolina State University, having retired as Senior Vice President-Technology and Manufacturing from International Paper. Additionally, Dr. Phillips was a board member of Illim – IP Russia JV. Currently, Dr. Phillips teaches Strategic Business Practices in the Pulp and Paper Industry at NCSU and provides leadership and critical thinking across the Department. Dr. Phillips is an on-demand consultant for the forest product industry.

Dr. Ronalds Gonzalez

Drivers for Value in the Tissue Industry

Nanotechnology in Tissue Manufacturing (Business perspective) Dr. Ronalds Gonzalez will talk about what attributes are driving value in the tissue industry (from the shelf), with an analysis of how the market is evolving using data analytics and econometric models. The use of nano-cellulose materials in tissue manufacturing, is it worth it? Dr. Gonzalez is co-director of the Tissue Pack Innovation Lab and faculty of Conversion Economics and Supply Chain in the Paper Science & Engineering at NC State.  Prior to joining NC State University, Dr. Gonzalez was corporate controller manufacturing and logistics for North, Central and South America for SCA (Essity). He also held several positions in controlling and manufacturing at Smurfit Kappa Carton de Venezuela. Dr. Ronalds Gonzalez is a global expert in integrating analysis in supply chain, conversion process & economics, financial and risk analysis.

Dr. Robert Abt

Wood Fiber Supply

Dr. Robert Abt will present the evolution of wood fiber supply in the U.S. and will let us know how the future looks like for the next 10 years. What volumes are available? How will fiber costs be affected? Dr. Abt is Carl Alwyn Schenck professor in the College of Natural Resources at NC State University where he teaches natural resource management and forest economics. He has 25 years of experience in bio-economic modeling of southern forest resources and markets. He is the co-director of the Southern Forest Resource Assessment Consortium that provides strategic resource information for the major southeastern wood producers and consumers.

Bernard Hoeger is the recent Production Manager in charge of a 150” wide dry crepe Recard Crescent Former Paper Machine, Comer Recycle 90T/D Deink Plant; UEM Wastewater Treatment Plant and Two identical HRT Fire Tube Boilers 325 psig Maximum Allowable Working Pressure.

Siana Jannesari

Siana Jannesari will speak about the development of consumer patterns in the consumer tissue and away from home segments. What is going to happen in 5 years?  Siana is an Industry Analyst for Tissue & Hygiene at Euromonitor International in Chicago. Her role includes performing primary and secondary research, market analysis, report publication, and working with clients on both the supplier-side and manufacturer-side of the industry. Siana has a bachelor’s degree from Boston College, with a major in Economics and a minor in French. She has been working in market research since 2013.

David Knight

 Fiber Sourcing from a Global Perspective

In his role as Global Sourcing Director for the major tissue producer (Essity), Mr. David Knight will discuss fiber sourcing challenges in different regions. How can additional research on specific topics provide flexibility and reduce market impacts?    David Knight is the Global Fiber Sourcing Director for Essity. He has more than 30 years of experience in different fiber sourcing roles.

Tiago De Assis will present recent research work on the potential of using different types of fiber to meet/enhance product performance and sustainability. Which types of fibers we can potentially use for a flexible furnish? Tiago is a chemical engineer graduated from UFSCar (Federal University of Sao Carlos – Brazil). He has 7 years of professional experience in different roles in lysine refinery, fuel cell startup company and as process engineer in a Brazilian bioenergy laboratory (CTBE). He is a PhD student at NCSU and is currently developing processes and fibers to enhance tissue paper properties and create value for the paper industry. He has experience with process simulation, mathematical programming, analytical tool, technology evaluation and techno-economic analysis.

Soile Kilpi

 Fiber Market Trends and Manufacturing Landscape

Soile Kilpi will provide insights on how the manufacturing landscape will look for tissue. Competitors, new facilities.     Soile is Director Strategy Poyry. Kilpi leads the North American pulp and paper team and focuses on the industry cluster inclusive of e.g. tissue, containerboard, cartonboard, and specialties manufacturing, converting and sales and marketing. Ms. Kilpi supervises projects related to strategic planning, entry strategies, fiber and raw material strategies and due diligence work with industry and private equity clients. She has worked on engagements in the US, Canada, China, Europe, and Latin America.

Roadmap for the Use of Nano-Cellulose in Hygiene Tissue

Dr. Lokendra Pal will walk us across the newly established Tissue Pack Innovation Lab and will show us a roadmap on the use of nano-cellulose for tissue manufacturing. How can we work with the Tissue Pack initiative? What are their capabilities?      Dr. Pal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Forest Biomaterials at North Carolina State University. Dr. Pal brings over 14 years of industrial experience in the research and manufacturing of paper-based materials and professional experience in managing and collaborating with industrial partners worldwide. Dr. Pal has 10 patents. Before joining NC State, Dr. Pal spent 9 years working with Hewlett-Packard in the Media Supplies and Solutions group leading new product development and cost reduction programs.

Dr. Joel Pawlak

Sustainability, Government Regulations, and Standards

Dr. Joel Pawlak will talk about the use of biotechnology in tissue manufacturing, and on regulations, sustainability and standards in the industry. Dr. Pawlak is Associate Professor and co-Director of the Tissue Pack Innovation Lab. Dr. Pawlak has an internationally renowned research program and has received three recognitions by the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) for his research. Research areas include paper physics, product design, novel biomaterials, composites, and molecular biology. Dr. Pawlak serves on the Science Advisory Board for a number of start-up companies dealing with the use of forest materials and natural polymers to create high-value products.

Dr. Richard Venditti

How Recycling Operations Affect Fiber Quality?

Dr. Richard Venditti will discuss how recycling operations affect fiber quality. How does the future look in terms of fiber quality?  Dr. Venditti is Professor in the Department of Forest Biomaterials at NCSU. Dr. Venditti’s research group develops new polymeric biomaterials from wood and performs environmental life cycle analysis of renewable materials. Dr. Venditti is a global expert in paper recycling.

Clayton Campbell

 In-Depth Sheet Structure Analysis Utilizing KemView SSA™

Clayton Campbell will talk about the use of the KemView SSA™ as a lab and portable field support tool that provides a unique and comprehensive view into the sheet structure of tissue and towel products. Clayton Campbell is a Global Tissue Business Development Senior Manager for Kemira. Global Corporate Headquarters are located in Helsinki, Finland with North American Headquarters in Atlanta, GA. Clay joined Kemira in 2000 through the acquisition of OmniKem, a tissue specialty chemical company. Clay was the Vice President for OmniKem and engineered their growth from startup to the acquisition. Previously, as Marketing Manager for Quaker Chemicals, he initiated and developed their growth in the tissue segment.

Dr. Chao Xu

Application of BCTMP in Tissue Papers

Dr. Eric Chao Xu will present options to use BCTMP pulp in fiber applications. Is this a real alternative? Dr. Chao Xu is the director of process and technology for Andritz. His work experience includes mechanical and chemical pulping processes on different raw materials (Wood and non-wood fibers) and other industrial applications using Andritz equipment. He was awarded The Douglas Attack Award by CPPA (PAPTAC) for mechanical pulping committing (1996 & 1997) for the best papers on mechanical pulping in CPPA annual meeting/conference. He has been granted three patents on BCTMP technologies (P-RC-APMP).

Aimee Gregg manages one of the largest fiber-based packaging and paper recycling operations in the U.S. She will help us understand current challenges in the recycling business and what the future looks like. Aimee Gregg is General Manager for Recycling Operations for International Paper, she manages 18 plants across the country.

John Rager will talk about fiber furnish trends for the Tissue Industry. What is the outlook for 2018 and the following years?  Jonathan Rager is Senior Vice President Analytics at RISI. Previously he was Vice President Mill Intelligence at RISI and Senior Vice President – Forest Product Industry for General Electric.

Dr. Sudipta Dasmohapatra

Supply Chain Analytics – A look at Supplier Risks and ImpactFortifying purchasing decisions via data analytics for better risk mitigation and cost reduction

Sudipta will discuss how predictive modeling can be applied to narrow down the multitude of variables towards enhanced sourcing decisions, as part of the Vertaeon presentation.  She will briefly exemplify which factors can affect risks and spend and how companies can have a clearer view of potential problem areas.

While supporting and advising Vertaeon LLC on analytics modeling,  Dr. Sudipta Dasmohapatra holds a position as a faculty and Director of the Masters in Statistical Science program at the Department of Statistical Science, Duke University. Prior to Duke, she was an Associate Professor in Marketing Analytics at the Institute for Advanced Analytics, and at Dept. of Forest Biomaterials at NC State University.  She has over 10 years of experience consulting in analytics and data science. She has worked with numerous entities on a variety of business analytics projects.

Rekha Menon-Varma

Supply Chain Analytics – A look at Supplier Risks and ImpactFortifying purchasing decisions via data analytics for better risk mitigation and cost reduction

Rekha will talk about how a cohesive supply chain analytics platform can overlay multiple factors that contribute to supplier impact and risks that can affect sourcing and company profitability.  She will also discuss leveraging the platform to combine this with a related operational aspect, viz., spend analytics.

Rekha Menon-Varma is Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Vertaeon LLC, a Supply Chain and Energy Data Analytics Company based in Atlanta, GA.  She is responsible for setting the overall company vision and leading client and product development.  Prior to Vertaeon, Rekha worked over 16 years at large multinationals, Lyondell Chemical and NV Bekaert SA in the US & EU, and held roles of increasing responsibility.  Her multi-functional experiences include leadership roles in corporate development, enterprise risk assessment, global marketing, and engineering.
