TAPPI and The Paper Science and Engineering School at North Carolina State University bring to you the Hands-On Workshop for Hygiene Tissue Basics. This workshop will give you a complete and systematic review of the basic to complex concepts and processes involved in the manufacturing of hygiene tissue. Lectures will be complemented with hands-on laboratory work, providing participants with theory and practical experience.

Workshop Overview

The Hands-On Workshop for Hygiene Tissue Basics has been designed to provide a broad overview of concepts and unit operations involved in the manufacturing of hygiene tissue: Fiber for Tissue, Pulping, Bleaching, Refining, Recycling, Tissue Making and Converting.

The agenda of the workshop includes presentations each morning and hands-on laboratory and pilot-plant exercises every afternoon. Concepts and other course material learned during the morning will be re-emphasized with practice for increased understanding.

The registration fee of $1,890 includes a notebook, a dinner banquet, and lunches.

Learning Outcomes

After this workshop, participants should be able to:

Discuss the entire process for tissue manufacturing.
Describe the major types of fibers used in tissue making and its effect on tissue paper.
Discuss how unit operations affect fiber and tissue paper properties.
Analyze the fiber types of pulping and correlate these with products in the marketplace.
Describe the stages and operations of bleaching.
Discuss waste treatment and environmental regulations.
Identify the major grades and properties of tissue paper.
Discuss stock preparation and the approach system.
Explain the operation of the wet-end and dry-end of the paper machine.
Specify basic converting operations.
Discuss the recycling of paper and current challenges in fiber sourcing.

CEUs

TAPPI will award 3.7 continuing education units (CEUs) to participants who attend at least 80% of the education sessions. The Education Department of TAPPI meets the Criteria for Certification established by the Authorized Provider Commission of the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), 1620 I Street NW, Washington DC 20006.

Dr. Ronalds Gonzalez	Dr. Gonzalez is co-director of the Tissue Pack Innovation Lab (www.go.ncsu.edu/tissue) and faculty of Conversion Economics and Supply Chain in the Paper Science & Engineering at NC State University. Prior to joining NC State University, Dr. Gonzalez was corporate controller manufacturing and logistics for North, Central and South America for SCA (Essity). He also held several positions in controlling and manufacturing at Smurfit Kappa Carton de Venezuela. Dr. Ronalds Gonzalez is a global expert in integrating analysis in supply chain, conversion process & economics, financial and risk analysis for the tissue and paper industry.
Dr. Lokendra Pal	Dr. Pal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Forest Biomaterials at North Carolina State University and co-director of the Tissue Pack Innovation Lab. Dr. Pal brings over 14 years of industrial experience in the research and manufacturing of paper-based materials and professional experience in managing and collaborating with industrial partners worldwide. Dr. Pal has 10 patents. Before joining NC State, Dr. Pal spent 9 years working with Hewlett-Packard in the Media Supplies and Solutions group leading new product development and cost reduction programs.
Dr. Richard Venditti	Dr. Venditti is Professor in the Department of Forest Biomaterials at NCSU. Dr. Venditti’s research group has as a goal to develop and understand systems for the effective utilization of renewable resources to produce sustainable products, including polymeric materials and biofuels. His research interests include novel biobased product materials, biofuels, paper recycling, and life cycle analysis of renewable materials. He has published approximately one hundred peer-reviewed manuscripts and an equal number of scientific presentations.
Dr. Joel Pawlak	Dr. Pawlak is an Associate Professor and co-Director of the Tissue Pack Innovation Lab. Dr. Pawlak has an internationally renowned research program and has received three recognitions by the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) for his research. Research areas include paper physics, product design, novel biomaterials, composites, and molecular biology. Dr. Pawlak serves on the Science Advisory Board for a number of start-up companies dealing with the use of forest materials and natural polymers to create high-value products.
Dr. Hasan Jameel	Dr. Jameel is a graduate of Texas A&M and Princeton University where he earned his bachelors and Ph.D. In Chemical Engineering. His first job was working for International Paper as the Senior Research Associate in Tuxedo Park, NY in 1979 and then started working at the IP Ticonderoga Mill in 1984. Dr. Jameel has taught at NC State for 27 years. He also does research in many different areas including Bioenergy and Biochemicals and is on the Board of Directors for Packaging Corporation of America. Over the years, he has received awards such as NCSU Outstanding Teacher, Alumni Distinguished Professor, and Outstanding Advisor, along with a TAPPI Outstanding Instructor award.
Dr. Med Byrd	Dr. Medwick V. Byrd, Associate Teaching Professor and Undergraduate Coordinator for the Paper Science and Engineering program, Ph.D. NCSU. His research interests are mechanical pulping, chemical pulping and bleaching, and non-wood pulping. Other areas of his research and technical service are agricultural fibers and biomass. He holds a patent for the simple pulping and bleaching of corn stalk and other agricultural residues. Dr. Byrd is a member of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry and was named an Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor in 2011.
