Day 7 – A Day of Rest and Travel
Day 7 – by Makalya Moore and Emmy Howell
This was our last day in Sitges and we were allowed a late start to recuperate from beachside fun. At 12:00 PM we departed for Zaragoza. Checkout was smooth and we made our way for the bus. As we traveled, the ocean slipped out of the horizon and was replaced by rolling desert hills. The drive was about two hours and forty five minutes, and most students ended up taking their midday siesta.
Along the way we passed a tall arch that marked the Greenwich meridian, which is the division of the eastern and western hemispheres. When we arrived in Zaragoza, we realized that many shops and restaurants were closed. This was due to Spain taking Sunday as a day of rest very seriously, so students were encouraged to explore the city to find what was available. Most of us did venture out to find tapas, but once that was achieved many students did take advantage of the first full day we had to relax and remained at the hotel for most of the afternoon and evening. A few of us did explore the city, with small groups travelling out to the Aljaferia palace to walk around the park that makes up its grounds. A few more students walked to the Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Pilar, a Roman Catholic cathedral in the heart of Zaragoza. The cathedral in particular was especially beautiful, and was filled with gold and marble iconography.
After resting for most of the day, the rest of the students went to various late dinners. Many of us had less traditional Spanish foods that evening, such as pizza and pasta. This marked the end of our first day in Zaragoza, and was a nice break before transitioning back into our busy schedule of mill tours and travel.
