Make Plans to Attend the Upcoming May 7th, 2015 National Firewood Workshop, Voorheesville, New York

This is a one day nationally focused workshop that attracts all the involved segments of the firewood industry.  We have held two such workshops at the Wood Education and Resource Center in Princeton, West Virginia and will be at the William Smith, Jr. Extension Center of the Albany County Cooperative Extension Office in Voorheesville, New York on May 7th, 2015.

This workshop focuses on the factors that determine the success of a firewood processing business that include wood procurement, processing equipment, kiln drying and packing equipment, business management and marketing.  The goal is to provide an educational and networking event for the US firewood industry.

Important Firewood Publications

1-In 1980 Jeffrey Wartluft and Ralph Monahan of the US Forest Service published”Prospectus:  Firewood Manufacturing and Marketing”, a publication that reviewed three sizes of firewood production operations and discussed the business parameters in terms of equipment, output and profitability.  This is a well written publication that offers insights into how a firewood business can be evaluated prior to startup as well as improving an existing firewood publication.  This publication is available at this link as a pdf.  It is numbered NA-FR-17 in the US Forest Service publications system.

2-Harry Watt’s publication about processing lumber edge strips into bagged kindling products.  This publication is available at this link as a pdf.
