The mission of Wood Products Extension within the Department of Forest Biomaterials is to increase the competitiveness and profitability of North Carolina’s wood products industry, improve markets, and increase consumer understanding of wood products and their proper use.

Current grant projects:

Seven WERC Workshops Grant-this grand will be hosting three National Firewood workshop that have included one in NH and one online that highlighted TN.  The last National Firewood Workshop will take place in WI in 2022.  Workshops completed to date include the National Upholstery Frame Workshop 2019 at Conover, NC, the National Firewood Workshop 2019 in Epsom, NH, the Live Edge Slab Workshop in Statesville, NC in 2020, and the online National Firewood Workshop 2020 with Tennessee DoF.  Others are scheduled as noted below.

This grant involves NCSU Wood Products Extension with the help of industry partners to develop a system of production for creating CLT panels that are typically 4-1/8″ thick x 48″ wide x 96″ long that are assembled on site for residential housing.  Take this link for additional information.  Note that we are hosting a morning workshop at the Hodges Wood Products Lab to go over the findings of this grant project.  The workshop is free and one can register at this link.

The US Forest Service has awarded NCSU Wood Products Extension a grant to work with the NC primary and secondary in North Carolina from now into 2022. Working with NCSU WPE is the NCFS and West65thInc on this project that has its goal to grow sales, profitability and employment.  Regional meetings in each of the NCFS 13 districts will take place in 2020 and 2021 to gather professionals in the industry to discuss marketing problems and the seeking of solutions.

A series of six workshops in Region 9 of the US Forest Service System focused on supporting small sawmill and dry kiln businesses.  Two workshops will focus on operating a profitable small sawmill business, two on operating a small dry kiln lumber business and two will focus on operating a profitable live edge slab business. Two workshops will take place in the western zone of Region 9 in 2021include one in IA for small sawmill businesses and one in MI for dry kiln businesses.  In 2022 we plan to host a total of four small sawmill and dry kiln workshops in WI, WV, NY and NH.  Note the schedule below.

This grant hosts a regional firewood business workshop on November 4, 2021 for North Carolina and one in Virginia in 2022.  The 2021 workshop will take place at the Jordan Lake Forest Educational Center near Chapel Hill, NC.  The 2022 workshop is set for May 5, 2022 at Taylor Park in Ashland, VA.  Brochure NC VA Firewood Business Workshop May 2022Registration link.

Upcoming Events-2022-by grant project:

1-Statewide Forest and Wood Products Regional NC-we will be visiting folks in person across the state and hosting multiple focused Zoom meetings on marketing issues.  Anyone wishing a personal visit can contact Harry Watt at harry_watt@ncsu.edu.

2-Seven USFS Workshops-We have completed the 2018 Upholstery Furniture Frame Workshop in Conover, NC, the 2019 National Firewood Workshop in Epsom, NH, the Live Edgs Slab Workshop in Statesville, NC in 2020 and the 2021 National Firewood Workshop Online Zoom format, with cooperation from the state of Tennessee.  In 2022 we have three workshops in this series to go:

3-Northern USFS Region 9 Six Small Sawmill Workshops-2021 to 2022

These workshop are spread out across the northern US from Iowa to New England.  There are three focused themes in these workshops-Small Sawmill Businesses, Small Dry Kiln Businesses and Live Edge Slab Businesses.

Two of the workshops occurred in 2021 with four coming in 2022-note links to register are above.

1-Small Sawmill Business Workshop Iowa, Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021, Solon, IA (near Cedar Rapids), $45 per attendee, a one day workshop on the business of operating a profitable small sawmill business.  Co-sponsored by the Iowa DNR. This workshop was successfully held as scheduled with assistance from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

2-Small Dry Kiln Business Workshop Michigan, Tuesday, October 26, 2021, East Lansing, MI at Michigan State Univ.  $45 per attendee, a one day workshop on the business of operating a profitable small dry kiln operation.  Co-sponsored by MI DNR and MSU.  This workshop was held as scheduled and successful.
