2020 Graduate Research Symposium Information
Outcomes
This event is co-sponsored by Eastman Chemical and the CNR Research Office. It will showcase and celebrate the outstanding research and scholarship of graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and their faculty advisers or mentors in the Departments of Forestry and Environmental Resources, Forest Biomaterials, and Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, and the Center for Geospatial Analytics, in the College of Natural Resources at NC State University.
The event will consist of a poster session/competition and a 3-minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition. All CNR graduate students and post-docs are invited to submit an abstract for a poster presentation. However, only Master’s and PhD students from CNR graduate programs with results to present are eligible for the poster competition and the 3MT® competition. Prizes ranging from $500 to $1000 to support travel to conferences or other scholarly meetings will be awarded.
NC State faculty, staff, administrators, graduate students, post-docs, and supporters and partners of the College of Natural Resources are encouraged to attend. Please register so we can plan refreshments accordingly. However, if you do not have a chance to register by the deadline, you are still welcome to attend and support our impressive graduate students and post-docs. We welcome all latecomers.

Poster and Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition Guidelines
ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE FEBRUARY 5, 2020
Present your Research in the Poster Gallery
Prizes: 1 Master’s and 1 PhD student from each category will be awarded $750 to be used toward travel.

Posters are to be printed on paper with dimensions are limited to 4′ wide by 3′ tall. Do not laminate your poster, or it will not stay affixed to the poster walls. Posters must be stand-alone without added literature or digital augmentation. Setup time for posters is 12PM to 1PM on February 26, 2020 at Talley Student Union Ballrooms. Pushpins will be provided. The primary author is expected to proctor their poster between the hours of 1PM and 4PM when the Gallery will be open to attendees including judges. Winners will be announced at the evening reception at 5:30PM. When submitting their abstracts, students will need to upload a Word document no longer than a single page of text including the title, author contacts, and keywords. Graduate students and post-docs interested in on-campus poster design resources or printing services can take advantage of the Wolf Xpress.
Compete in the Three Minute Thesis Competition
Prizes will be awarded for the 3MT session as follows:
First Place – $1000 toward travel
Second Place – $750 toward travel
Third Place – $500 toward travel
The College of Natural Resources models its Three Minute Thesis competition (3MT®) on the one held by NC State University Graduate School each fall. Those students interested in competing should visit the Three Minute Thesis competition (3MT®) where past winners and videos are posted. Three PowerPoint slides should be created using the template: NCSU Slide Template (microphone, digital project and laptop will be provided). Please review the Eligibility guidelines below. There will be a preliminary competition from 1:30PM to 3:30PM the day of the competition to select the finalists. Judges from each Department of CNR will evaluate submitted abstracts and select those that qualify to compete. When submitting their abstracts, students will need to upload a Word document no longer than a single page of text including the title, author contacts, and keywords.
3MT® Competition and Poster Gallery Eligibility
Active graduate students, both Ph.D. and Master’s, with data results are encouraged to participate in the poster competition. Active graduate students, both Ph.D. and Master’s, with data results may also participate in the 3MT competition. When registering an abstract for the 3MT competition, graduate students will be required to list their committee chair who will confirm the student’s status. Other graduate students without results as well as post-doctoral scholars are encouraged to register to present, but will not be eligible for the competition aspect.

The symposium is open to the NCSU community and anyone interested in the research fostered at the College of Natural Resources. However, the abstract submission is intended for faculty, post-docs and students of the College of Natural Resources only.

Abstracts are being accepted until February 5, 2020. Reminder to students, If you are unfamiliar with the 3-Minute Thesis (3MT®) presentation format, please review the guideline and the videos of successful presentations from other academic institutions. The abstracts already received will all be formatted to match the program book for the event (2018-abstracts-program-book-sample). A committee consisting of Departmental faculty will confer with you directly if needed. All students submitting an abstract are automatically registered to attend the Symposium.

The 2020 CNR Graduate Research Symposium will take place at Talley Student Union Ballrooms located on NC State University’s campus.
- Research Poster Gallery will be held in the Hatteras-Ocracoke Ballroom
- Three-minute Thesis Competition will be held in the Currituck Ballroom
