During the summer of 2008 Kathryn Reis helped Sarah McCaffery interview state and county officials and residents impacted by the Gap Fire in Goleta, California, the Cascade Fire in Red Lodge, Montana and the Gunbarrel Fire near Cody,Wyoming. She also transcribed many of the above interviews as well as the focus group discussion for the South Fork Fire of 2006 near Cascade, Idaho. In 2009 Kathryn conducted focus group discussions in Montana for the Hicks Park and Ahorn Fires of 2007.
Prior to entering the graduate program at NC State University, Kathryn did wildlife policy and governmental affairs work for the Wildlife Management Institute, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and U.S. Geological Survey/Cooperative Research Units Program in Washington, D.C. For her doctoral research she is exploring the personal and organizational factors that lead U.S. Fish and Wildlife biologists to engage in collaborative decision making activities with other natural resource professionals and non-scientists. Kathryn holds a B.S. in Wildlife Biology at Colorado State University (1995) and a M.S. in Willdife Ecology at Michigan State University (2000).
