I am a Professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources and associate faculty with the NC State Toxicology Program.  I collaborate with diverse academic researchers, municipalities, state agencies, federal agencies, landowners, and NGOs on problems and challenges in the realms of water resources, renewable energy, and forestry. Current water research projects interface across aspects of water quality, water quantity, wastewater reuse, nutrients, emerging chemicals of concern, and community engagement.  I also support research and extension to use short-rotation forest systems to mitigate excess water and contamination and to develop sustainable wood products and bioeonomies.  I have coordinated development and management of the online Renewable Energy Assessment Certificate and Minor since 2014.

Recent and current projects address community and stakeholder engagement for municipal wastewater reuse, HRMS as a diagnostic tool to assist groundwater managers and private well users in testing well water, assessing the vulnerability of North Carolina’s aquifers to new water intrusion from extreme storms, building workforce needs for sustainability, and optimizing hybrid poplar for sustainable bio-products in western North Carolina.
